Giving You The BUSINESS:  What is Quality Sound?

What is both exciting and puzzling these days is the ability for people to make, share and find music.  The reason this is exciting is that people with that incredible talent do not need a lot of money to get their music recorded these days.  What is puzzling is that it seems even those who are really not that talented at all are putting out their music.  Or truly talented artists think it is enough to hit record.

Has the culture of apps, "how to videos" and inexpensive recording equipment made a generation of "so so" artists?  Are the unsigned and indie artists satisfied that something good enough it is in fact...good enough?  Is there a sense of entitlement that because they recorded their songs they are worthy of airplay

Want proof?  Tune into one of the fantastic indie internet radio shows that play all songs submitted.  Can you hear the artists that have invested time and money in their songs?  The ones who bring true talent and can hold a note?  Can you hear the ones that sang into a mic in a room with no proper isolation for echo and who really haven't grasped the importance of mixing and mastering their track?

Is this a reflection of the current culture of "I deserve", "I want therefore give me" or is that because only the truly endeavoring artists that want to invest in their sound, their product and themselves are seeking out help to release a great product?  Have we lowered our level of expectation?

Should we question this or just be happy for the great indie artists who do take the time and hope they get their music heard?

I applaud those radio stations truly want to support indie artists and play all music.  Thank you for supporting indie artists, but should we include some standards to get airtime?  For example...if the sound is so low the listener needs to turn it up to maximum and hush the people in the room - don't play it.  Or if the vocals run into the beat making it hard to understand which is which - it doesn't get played.  Could we offer a group of volunteer music lovers to screen the music?  I understand not everyone will like all music, but everyone should be able to hear a decent quality sound

Artists - Listen to your favorite artists song on your headphones and then listen to yours.  Do you need to adjust the volume?  Do you need to get some assistance with mixing and mastering?  Is your beat the same throughout without variance? Put your request for assistance out there...there are many people who offer their services for very reasonable prices.  Offer to barter services if you have an expertise...Just please put some time into making a song worthy of airplay.
