Hip Hop For Better Health: Interview with Sandra Espinal about her Weight Loss Journey
Check out this amazing story from Sandra Espinal about her incredible weight loss journey. For the "South East Hip Hop For Better Health" segment Sandra sat down with Jay of South East Hip Hop Magazine to discuss and inform readers on how she loss the weight, all the steps it took, how it made her feel and more! A lot of great knowledge and information was shared, and you can read all about it in the interview below........
South East Hip Hop Magazine: How long did it take you to reach your goal?
Sandra Espinal: I wanted to lose weight right after I had my baby I started diets and gave up on them. So when I became really determined in January of 2013. It took me about 18 months to lose 100 pounds. I got started January of 2013 as a new year new goal type of thing.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: What inspired you to want to lose weight and get healthy?
Sandra Espinal: What inspired me to lose weight was after breaking up with my daughters father I was stressed, overweight and very depressed. I hated the person I was at that time. I wanted to get healthy for my daughter but mainly for myself to feel good about myself. I never forget a time I went in to target tried on some jeans size 16 I left the store crying that was the moment I said no more. Time to be happy and feel good about the women I was.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: What types of work outs did you do to lose the weight and maintain the weight loss?
Sandra Espinal: 90 percent of my weight I lost on pure cardio 5 miles a day or better every day. Walking to the gym is about one mile I would go and come back walking instead of driving and I would do the treadmill or the step master till I reached 3 miles or till my mind said I cant no more.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: How often do you work out a week?
Sandra Espinal: I work out 3 to 4 times a week or mainly whenever I get the chance to squeeze in a workout. If I don't go to the gym I work out at home using weights, yoga mats, and a elasticity band.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: Do you have a set work out routine? If so, what is it?
Sandra Espinal: My routine is pretty firm I always do the same step master and then treadmill and weights at home. I'm trying to do more weights since I lost all the weight my skin is very loose.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: Did you change your diet? What do you eat?
Sandra Espinal: I had to learn that this is a lifestyle you can never think of it as a diet. I learned to eat healthy and make better choices. I don't eat fast food, breads, red meat and pasta only on my cheat day which I usually try to treat myself once a week.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: When it comes to weight loss, is it more about changing your diet, or is it more about burning of the calories you do consume?
Sandra Espinal: If you learn how to make healthier choices you will learn that the more healthy you eat the more food you can consume because it's less calories you get to consume more. I try to eat every 3 hours 3 meals making breakfast my largest meal and lunch and dinner and two snacks with at least a gallon of water a day.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: Is there any other tips you would like to give the readers?
Sandra Espinal: My tips for readers are don't give up everyone has a bad day, stay focus, surround yourself with people of similar interests that helps a lot. and always reward yourself for ever 5 or 10 pounds you loose that will encourage you. I have met some amazing people on this journey and people with similar goals will encourage you and motivate you.
Sandra Espinal is also a member of the Facebook Group to encourage others to live a healthy lifestyle and being a support system for others to exercise by the name of Hip Hop for Better Health with group admin and South East Hip Hop featured artist Rhyme Scheme. Just Another Day: Graffiti Gallery
Just Another Day: Graffiti Gallery
by Renee Batson AKA Afrosoul
Just Another Day
Graffiti comes from the Greek term "graphein" meaning to write, and the word graffiti is plural for the Italian word "gaffito" meaning scratch. It's history can be dated back to prehistoric times where cave men constructed wall drawings as a way of communicating with one another.
Many would say that graffiti is a form of vandalism, however, since the 20th century graffiti has become a prominent fixture within urban communities.
As Hip hop emerged graffiti grew based on the social, cultural, and political inequalities that impoverished communities had to face. Graffiti has become the foundation of personal expression of an oppressed and disenfranchised people throughout the globe.
If you have observed and studied the art of graffiti you would see that the pieces are a reflection of our voice, much like the words a lyricist writes down on paper before spittin' an epic verse on a track. It is a reflection of our thoughts, feelings, and frustrations with a system who has forgotten about the people who struggle to survive day to day in the urban jungle.
Personally, I have always had a love for art. Since childhood I was exposed to artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Micheal Angelo, and Salvador Dali long before I was introduced to street art. Once I was exposed to street art, I fell in love with it. From the colors, lines, and mixture of letters to the expressive nature of each piece, it captures the very essence of music. Come to think it, the Greek meaning of graffiti is writing which would be the artist/mc, and the Italian meaning is scratch which would be the DJ. See now how graffiti goes hand in hand with every aspect of hip hop culture!
Even though graffiti doesn't make a sound, it speaks volumes, kinda like the sounds you hear from a cassette tape when u first drop it in a boom box!!!
Graffiti will never die. It will remain on walls, trains and everywhere that these artists can get to. It is no different then the art you view in a gallery, the only difference is it is constantly in motion.

South East Hip Hop Magazine: What's up General Grown, how are you doing?
General Grown: I'm Good! Living life and grinding... Trying to make it to the next level... STRAIGHT WORK NO PLAY!
South East Hip Hop Magazine: What's new with you and the music?
General Grown: Right now I got my next single "Champion", which will be out ASAP, a mixtape I'm finishing up, and I'm bringing on a new management team to help grow my brand as an artist, and the whole G.M.T record label. Ya boy got a lot more coming that I will be giving details and updates on in the next week...
South East Hip Hop Magazine: How would you describe yourself as an artist?
General Grown: I'm very versatile! I got way more than one or two styles... There's a lot of different flavors I will be bringing out on my upcoming mixtape... Doing music is something I have a passion for, so I put my all into it...
South East Hip Hop Magazine: How long have you been rhyming?
General Grown: Since I was 13... My cousin, homie, and I use to spit off the top of our head for fun. A few years ago I made up my mind to start doing it fasho, just had to make a way. Around August of 2014 I started writing, and been taking it serious every sense...
South East Hip Hop Magazine: What inspired you to want to be a rapper?
General Grown: I've always been passionate about music. So when I learned my real lyrical ability, I had to get it out... Honestly music is something I can't go without... Plus I always wanted to be able to show kids no matter where we come from, we can rise above it...
South East Hip Hop Magazine: Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
General Grown: I could name plenty of artists from back in the days, from all different types of music. My favorite hip hop artist growing up was Tupac, and he still is now... Although as I got older listening to rappers like TI, Rick Ross, and Jay Z made me respect the business side of the music more.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: What projects are you working on now?
General Grown: My singe "Built For This", is out for purchase... I got my next single "Champion" on the way. Mixtape coming ASAP... More project updates will be available over the next week...

South East Hip Hop Magazine: What was one of the worst experiences you've faced as an artist and how did you bounce back from it or what did you learn from it?
General Grown: Doing business before getting a full understanding of what I was getting into, and who I was getting into it with... I learned to always do your research, and it's better to have a team...
South East Hip Hop Magazine: What's been one of your greatest achievements and milestones as an artist so far?
General Grown: To be real... being an artist, and plain out doing what I love is a BIG DEAL. I have made some great achievements in this short period of time. Not only am I an artist of the Grown Man Team label, I'm the FOUNDER... Starting a label was a SUPER MILESTONE for me FASHO...
South East Hip Hop Magazine: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
General Grown: 5 years from now I see the team and I winning many awards such as a GRAMMY OR TWO. The whole GMT movement will be strong as ever.
Grown push without limits so there's really no telling where I'll be, I might even do movies.
South East Hip Hop Magazine: What would you like to tell the readers that they may not already know?
General Grown: What a lot of people probably don't know about me is I have been through a tremendous amount of trials and tribulations... It's a blessing for me to even be here. Everything that I talk and rap about comes from my past or present. Another thing y'all may not know is I right more than hip hop or music period, I also will be bringing out my other writing abilities. I like to consider myself more than a artist...
South East Hip Hop Magazine: Is there anything else you would like to plug? Any shout outs?
General Grown: Everybody make sure y'all be on the look out for my next single Champion, my upcoming mixtape, and the whole GMT movement... More updates on the way... Check out my single Built For This, available now... I wanna give a BIG S/O to Southeast Hip Hop Magazine, the Grown Man Team, my Grown FAM, new management team, Lee Fleshman... and all my supporters! SALUTE FROM DA GENERAL!
